WHAT IS STEPHEN MINISTRY?
It is a one-to-one ministry by caring church members who have received 50 hours of training.
It is a an opportunity to reach out to others in an on-going, helping relationship with scheduled regularity, dependability, and confidentiality.
It is a ministry which provides a caring Christian friend who really listens.
It is a ministry named after Stephen, the first deacon in the early church, commissioned by the apostles to care for the community's needs.
WHO MIGHT WISH TO BE PAIRED WITH A STEPHEN MINISTER?
- the hospitalized, the terminally ill, the grieving
- the homebound or institutionalized, the aging and the elderly
- those with disablilites, the lonely, the depressed
- those with job crisis, the separated or divorced
- households experiencing a birth or adoption
- those with legal problems
- those experiencing faith struggles
WHO IS A STEPHEN MINISTER?
A lay person who, through training, has learned skills and developed gifts for bringing Christ's healing love to those who need it.
A caring and sharing person who reaches out with a supporting hand to the spiritual, social, and emotional needs of the Bethesda community.
A dedicated Christian, commissioned by Bethesda Presbytherian Church to offer confidential, in-depth caring.
A Stephen Minister is NOT:
- a counselor or therapist
- a problem solver
- a casual visitor
HOW CAN YOU BE PAIRED WITH A STEPHEN MINISTER?
If you have a need in your life that could be met by the Christian caring of a supportive Stephen Minister, you may call one of the Co-ordinators, and request that you be matched with a Stephen Minister whose experience and skills meet your needs. The only individuals who will know about your connection with the Stephen Ministry are you, your Stephen Minister, and the Co-ordinator who makes the assignment. HOW CAN YOU BECOME A STEPHEN MINISTER?
If you wish to become a Stephen Minister, a caring Christian who can support congregation members in need, you may apply to enter the next training program. A two-year commitment, including training, is expected. If you are interested in the Stephen Ministry Series, please contact one the Co-ordinators listed above.
