GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF OLD BETHESDA CHURCH

Old Bethesda The staff and officers of Bethesda Presbyterian Church are responsible for the maintenance and use of the church property. Because our old building is a valuable historic structure, we expect it to be used with careful consideration to maintaining its present condition. We welcome requests for church and grounds by individuals or organizations, within our church, or otherwise. There is no charge for the use of the church or picnic grounds by any member or group of our church family, or of other non-profit organization. These steps are necessary ones for those using these facilities:

  1. Consult early with the minister of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen. (944-1319)
  2. The date for proposed use must be cleared on the church calendar through the church office and approved by the Session, our governing board.
  3. Generally, only minimum cleaning is necessary (pews dusted, floors mopped, toilets tidied) before and after events. Custodial service is mandatory.
  4. No lighted candles are to be used in the church building for safety reasons.
  5. Since no lighting facilities are available, only daylight events may be scheduled

WEDDING POLICY AND PROCEDURES

  1. The Wedding Reservation Information Sheet is to be completed as soon as possible and submitted to the church office.
  2. Bethesda has its own wedding director, knowledgeable and experienced in wedding services and propriety, to assist in the details surrounding the marriage event. Our director must be used in your wedding at Old Bethesda, as she is familiar with the traditions and policies of the church.
  3. Traditionally, weddings at Old Bethesda will follow the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (USA). While this service is both beautiful and meaningful, some couples prefer a simpler service. Other alternatives may include a simple ceremony in which the couple, with a few friends, stand at the front of the Sanctuary with the minister.
  4. No alcoholic beverages are permitted on Old Bethesda's premises, and rice for throwing should be substituted with bird seed.
  5. Normally, the minister of Bethesda Presbyterian Church conducts the marriage ceremony. If the couple wishes to have another minister participate in the service, they must inform Bethesda's minister far enough in advance that approval might be sought from the Session.
  6. MUSIC

It is important to consult early (at least 2-3 months) with the minister, wedding director and music director of the church, since valuable information and assistance are available through them. Because the wedding ceremony is a sacred and holy service of the church, appropriate music for a wedding service should be selected according to standards for church worship. Any questions concerning the selection of music that may require special attention will be answered by the minister. Outside musicians are permitted to play for weddings only when approved by the wedding director in consultation with the minister. The music must be in compliance with aforementioned standards for church worship. There is no piano at Old Bethesda. If you wish to use a piano, you may use a keyboard. If Bethesda musicians are to be used for a wedding in this church, it is the responsibility of the bridal couple to make arrangements with them directly.

    MISCELLANEOUS

The use of nails, thumb tacks, screws and tape, etc. is forbidden. This includes the use of hardware or tape for securing pew ribbon markers. See a florist about the approved method of securing markers.

    PHOTOGRAPHY

Photographs may not be taken during the ceremony in Old Bethesda, nor flash pictures during the processional and recessional. Video tapes may be made from the balcony, if prior arrangements have been made with the minister and the director, or from the floor in the choir area, where the camera must be set up prior to the service and remain stationary.

Every effort will be made to cooperate fully with the bridal party and the photographer before the service and after the benediction. Bethesda likewise appreciates your cooperation in this policy and your efforts in informing friends in advance of the church's picture-taking regulations. It is meant to eliminate any distraction from the solemnity and sacredness of the marriage service.
